Getting a bar of the right size is difficult. A really big one will look odd when there are just one or two people having a drink. And a small one becomes difficult to use when there area lot of people around it. Console tables, placed next to the bar when there is a party or other such crowd situation will take some of the load off the bar and spread the crowd out a bit. Being tall and slim, console tables are of a height where mixing and pouring drinks on them is easy. Also, since console tables are designed to stand against wall, they can be placed flush against the walls near the bar to reduce the amount of circulation area they take up.
