A Glass Coffee Table Compliments Your Home Furnishings
Considering a glass coffee table for your home? If so, then you probably know where you will use the table, but have you thought about how you will use it? Though we know we need a coffee table in the living room for example, we may not have considered how that coffee table will get used. Will we use it for dining or just for serving snacks? Do we need the table to be light enough to move frequently? Glass coffee tables can be very heavy as the glass gets thicker and broader. Will the table get bumped often? Will my Mastiff jump on it?
If you need to move the table often then you will need a thinner tempered piece of glass. If you have children or dogs likely to jump on or near the glass coffee table you should consider some other material for your coffee table. I am sorry to disappoint you, but the possibility for breakage for the glass coffee table is too high. You will be better off with a wood or high density plastic if you need to move the table frequently and you have children and animals that could accidentally harm themselves and others.
How thick does the glass need to be? If it will be inside and not moved frequently but you do have children, the glass coffee table should be at least one-half inch thick. I prefer to recommend just shy of a one inch thick top in a solid cabinet base that extends all the way to the floor in order to prevent little ones from crawling underneath and bumping up on the glass from the underside of the table.
For open and airy installations where the edge of the glass is exposed, whether the base is wrought iron or wood or some other material you will prefer to have a glass top over one half inch thick as well. The thicker glass tough more expensive can withstand more bumps and is heavy enough that it is not likely to move if bumped. If the top is too light and gets bumped it can slide right off the base on to the floor. While it isn’t likely to break because it is tempered, it can be just heavy enough that you will have a hard time setting it back in place on the base. So you are better off with it being too heavy to bump off the base in the first place.
Glass tops are now available in all sorts of colors and treatments. If you want to conceal smudging consider a frosted or etched glass. You can also have your choice of colors though the standard colors are clear and smoke.
A thin lightweight tempered glass can be effective outside. It is important to consider how often you will move the coffee table glass at which point the weight of the glass becomes very apparent. When you decide how you will use the table, the style you prefer and then the color of glass that suits you, you are ready to purchase your glass coffee table. With online shopping so easy to do and shipping often included, why not try making the purchase online from a reputable store. Best wishes.
